Harris prior to becoming a Paratrooper was a Driving Instructor and wore the winged MT badge - Motor Transport. He was quickly promoted to Acting Sergeant (A/Sgt) on February 18, 1943. Harris knew he had found the woman he wanted to marry and took very little time in proposing. According to Sgt. Darrel was very proud of being a Paratrooper and chose his own headstone design. Major Proctor was the Commanding Officer designate for this new group that would form the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion.
