Beyond that, I feel like this was touching on a lot of ideas but failed to dive far enough into any of them. But Laura Albert’s story—multiple personalities? But what Stewart does here (and what I find she does in every film), is transfix us. With Kristen Stewart, Laura Dern, Jim Sturgess, Diane Kruger. But can Savannah give the audience what they want? Laura, a former phone-sex operator, has put her vocal and imaginative talents to use creating a persona for LeRoy, complete with husky, battered-Southern-belle accent, that exists everywhere except in the flesh.But that sham can only take her so far, and when Laura meets Savannah (Stewart), the younger sister of her long-term boyfriend Geoff (Jim Sturgess), she sees in the shy, awkward 19-year-old, with her messy crop of blue hair and halting sexuality, the perfect vessel for the gender-fluid LeRoy of her imagination. Enter Eva, an actor-director quite obviously based on Asia Argento, the Italian filmmaker who was,, enamoured with JT and directed a film adaptation based on his second novelThe Heart is Deceitful Above All Things.In, Eva and JT have an affair, seemingly a ploy by Eva to secure film rights. The film itself is a telling of events which is entertaining enough but it just feels a bit bland. Maybe she penetrated Eva with a fake penis – very much à la Boys Don’t Cry (Kimberley Peirce, … Stewart and Dern still make it a worthwhile watch.A fascinating, wild, complex true life story that says a lot about identity, gender roles, idol worship, etc. I actually watched this over a span of a few days because I was that bored.

With Kruger’s Eva an obvious stand-in for Argento (who made LeRoy’s second book, “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things,” into a 2004 film in which she did indeed star, which also played in Cannes, and which co-starred Jimmy Bennett, Argento’s recent accuser) suddenly, Kelly’s film is thrust into the same weird vortex as LeRoy’s writing, in that much of its intrigue derives not so much from the story itself as from the extent to which we can believe it’s true. Starring Kristen Stewart, Laura Dern, Diane Kruger, Jim Sturgess, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Courtney Love. Like a lot of people, I find the story of J.T. A young woman named Savannah Knoop spends six years pretending to be a transgender writer named JT Leroy, the made-up literary persona of her sister-in-law. As far as it goes, “JT LeRoy” is a capable film featuring superbly spiky performances from both Stewart and Dern (and Kruger, too, who impresses most in the moments when Savannah’s deception is finally revealed to Eva). I assume that this is in part because of the focus on Savannah Knoop rather than Laura Albert, as this perspective brings us into the story late and doesn’t give a lot of precedence of who J.T.
