Too bad I have not seen this available on VHS or DVD anywhere. But the bad urges seem to linger in, and he gives in to the cravings and temptations that plagues him very much. I absolutely love this movie and I was really surprised to find out that it has recieved a lot of criticism. I would love to see it again, so I hope they have the wisdom to release the DVD and allow me to refresh my all-too-aging memory. Was this review helpful? After gritting my teeth through too many movies that show Italians as wife-beating criminals and cowed women who never comb their hair, this movie is a loving and affectionate breath of fresh air, showing the only realistic portrayal of Italian family life I've ever seen in the movies. Pride For people with an eating disorder, it will make you cry and laugh at the same time.
But when he meets Lydia(Candance Azzara), his life changes for the better. Hey you can have all the food in the world to watch this flick, just don't make a pig out of yourself! It's funny how I actually winced at some scenes more now than before. It is a great movie!

Bancroft evidently tapped into her Bronx background for this story of an Italian American, played sympathetically by Dom DeLuise, who runs a greeting card shop and is struggling with weight and shyness in courting a young women who opens an antique shop in the neighborhood. Was this review helpful? Then Dom meets Lydia (Candice Azzara), a down-to-earth, zaftig, huggably adorable blonde who seems perfect for Dom if only he could work up the courage to ask her out. Actually I had the chance back in 2019, but I just never got around to watching it before now. Anne Bancroft does a splendid job of direction, and her character in the film is vivid, and colorful.

Directed by the late Anne Bancroft, Fatso is as funny and humane as anything her very funny husband, Mel Brooks, directed.
Fatso’s a whimsical film with a rhythm somewhere between jazz and an old Bollywood song. What I mean is that when you watch this movie, you experience the many ways that Italians live, love, interact with family, and take part in the world. I've lost count of how many times I've seen this movie. Having grown up watching the films of leads Bancroft, Dom DeLuise, and Ron Carey, I can hardly believe they're no longer with us. 15 out of 15 found this helpful. It doesn't have the seriousness - even the perverse dismal glamour - of alcohol or drug addiction, and yet at the same time we no longer feel comfortable laughing about it: Falstaff's complexities are beginning to sink in.

In this dark and sometimes sad comedy, Dominick -- an extremely obese man -- is pushed by his sister Antoinette to shed a few pounds lest he end up dead like his cousin. In 1975, he won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism. The whole movie has problems with camera placement - "Fatso's" an education in reverse about how often our audience reactions are cued by editing and angles - and there are times when the story's so uneasy with itself we wonder if the filmmakers wish they had a different subject.Maybe they do. 26 out of 27 found this helpful. This movie is very heartfelt and is able to capture how painful it is to have a passion for eating.It is easy to relate Dom and his struggle. There are some real classic moments in this film. It's a great movie in many ways. I finally saw this film a couple of days ago, having put it off due to middling reviews and a general lack of buzz. The girl that moves in just uses the guy for a shoulder to cry on while she goes bang some other guy that doesn't really care for her. Buy Movies. But what camera position does Bancroft choose for the cut?
