This is brutal British cinema at it's best. 4 out of 8 found this helpful. The film has lots of twists and turns. June 17, 2011 Struggling against the low expectations of those around him, John McGill changes from victim to avenger, scholar to NED, altar boy to glue sniffer. Director Peter Mullan has achieved with N.E.D.S exactly what Shane Meadows achieved with This Is England, he has captured a raw coming of age drama that is honest and accurate in every way imaginable.. At the same time, the teachers here show little interest except keeping order. July 14, 2011
Such a disappointment | MOVIES Neds -- Film Review. | Rating: 3.5/4 Rating: * * * * By Tim Robey. 8 out of 16 found this helpful. The most obvious thing to pick up no is the language. The film is set in the 70's but the main themes are just as applicable for youngsters in 2011 (trying to fit in, feeling like part of a group/gang).
The casting is good throughout, but McCarron makes the movie.
He has a flirtatious touch of dumb insolence that enrages those teachers who see his potential and take a personal risk in trying to bring him on.Gary Lewis has a great cameo as a teacher who elaborately embarrasses boys who are late, sarcastically asking if they are tired, and offering to carry them into the school building – an unimaginable humiliation. The movie's flaw is its grandstanding father-son confrontation. 710067)Hard-working Glaswegian teenager John (Conor McCarron) grows up in the shadow of his bruising older brother and an alchoholic father. However, the performance by Conor McCarron is fantastic, and some of the details, like Mr. McGil's "I want you down here" screams and the scenes of violence, scream verisimilitude. Respect? I can only believe that the character had serious mental issues and absolutely nothing to do with his upbringing which is supposed to be the sole grit of the movie because Mullen was unable to translate the main triggers in McGill's life that made him what he turned out to be. Was this review helpful? The swearing in Neds is prolific but, if my experience is anything to go by, is quite representative of how Glaswegians speak. The humanity and seriousness of his film-making, however, have made him an unignorable force for good. Published. FAQs & Help; Contact Us; Blog Search; Log In Join Now Betslip 0. It seemed to me that the characters could deal with the physical beatings, but the subtle, and silent violence was more brutal, insidious, and damaging. I was highly impressed. John McGill (Conner McCarron) becomes victim to this.
Share on Facebook. John McGill is a bright student and hounded by a local bully. Was this review helpful? Peter Mullan: the swot who lost the plot. And this brings us to the ending, most specifically the last shot of the film, where you see John guiding Canta, the bully with brain damage, through a field as they're headed to the zoo. Pride
This is the sort that wins lots of plaudits and it's not difficult to see why . He negatively influences anyone's life he comes into contact with, escalating with him viciously beating his father with a frying pan, dropping a slab of concrete onto an old bully's head, causing permanent brain damage, and slitting a kid's throat in a gang fight. Scottish films but I am familiar with Peter Mullan, having seen his completely depressing TYRANNOSAUR previously. Excellent acting, writing and direction. 3 out of 3 found this helpful. | There's also some pretty strong imagery involving John, in a "drug" induced hallucination, is almost "murdered by Jesus Christ. The whole package is rounded off nicely (in terms of supporting my previous points rather than satisfyingly) with one of the most bizarre finales I've seen in a movie in a long time. January 21, 2011

Neds, review Peter Mullan's first film as a writer-director since The Magdalene Sisters is a welcome slice of harsh reality. Encompassed by violent street gangs, neglectful parents, bullying teachers and a dearth of positive role models, a studious but emotionally abandoned kid turns thug. 5 out of 5 found this helpful. Changes to Look out too for Steven Robertson, who play the teacher Mr Bonetti. His father is a volatile drunk. NEDs (Non Educated Delinquents) is the story of a young man’s journey from prize-winning schoolboy to knife-carrying teenager. It's not exactly incredibly realistic, if it was it'd probably be deliberately paced, but it's a movie that's still grounded in the real world. First I have to admit that one reason that made this film more appealing for me was that at the moment I live in Glasgow, right in the area, where the film was filmed and here the "neds" are a part of daily life, only in different uniforms that in 70's. The story line follows John's involvement with his city's Ned culture and the consequences of it on his teenage years. The acting is strong, but Conor McCarron certainly does a great job here.
