The Dead Room is a 2015 New Zealand horror film directed by Jason Stutter, who co-wrote it with Kevin Stevens. A young orphan, Stephen, is sent to go and live with his strange, much older cousin at his remote country house. While it didn't hold a candle to the masterpiece of the series, The Signalman from 1976, it put Simon Callow's fruity, orotund voice to very fine use as Aubrey Judd. The Dead Room was inspired by the 1970s urban legend of a haunted farmhouse in Central Otago, New Zealand. But whatever happened to the classic ghost stories? Doctor Who, A Ghost Story For Christmas and The Man in Black have all been subject to this colonisation, this muscling in on well loved classic melodrama. Gatiss' direction is reliably creepy and of course, the whole thing is held together by Simon Callow. Interesting premise but poor scripting glossed over with some self-referential self-reverence.
