2014 She lets us into multiple characters perspectives *enough* that we have some doubts and curiosities about more than one of them.If you haven’t read any of Patricia Highsmith’s books, I would recommend that you give them a try. With deadpan accuracy, she delighted in creating true sociopaths in the guise of the everyday man or woman. This novel is about a slightly crazy author (yikes!) A Suspension of Mercy is Highsmiths only novel to be set in England, where the American lived for a time. She is the go-to writer for me when I want to safely and merrily derange myself. A murder plot hatched by two men who meet on a train is considered to be a joke by one of them, and a dangerously real plan by the other. She almost makes CRIME AND PUNISHMENT seem belaboured and peReally the core pleasure of reading Highsmith (and, Lord, what a supremely reliable pleasure!) In A Suspension of Mercy, a masterpiece of noir fantasy, Highsmith revels in eliciting the unsettling psychological forces that lurk beneath the surface of everyday contemporary life. Binge-read this in less than a day. And why did his neighbor Mrs. Lilybanks see him walking around one night, carrying a heavy carpet over his shoulder—who buries a carpet in the middle of the night? AlThis is the 5th novel I've read by Highsmith. Done well morally She really delivers the goods in this book, although the suspense builds very slowly. Please read this novel, it'll shake your cozy knowledge of mystery right down to the core. It has a different flavor from most murder stories. A Suspension of Mercy Highsmith Patricia. It is reminiscent of an earlier era, having been published in the 1960s, and markets perfectly as a cosy crime novel. What happened to her, and will he find her before he's falsely arrested for murder?A domestic suspense novel. Send-to-Kindle or Email . Absolutely nobody touches her. As with most of Highsmith's work, much of the beauty of the book comes from watching the plotting unwind, so I'll just say that A Suspension of Mercy is about a writer who ends up entertaining himself by imagining all the ways he might murder his wife, only to find those "harmless" games resulting in some very real consequences. But Highsmith's far more subtle & perceptive than any horror filmmaker whose work I've ever experienced. Sydney Bartleby is an American living in Suffolk with his English wife Alicia; she lives quite comfortably on her inheritance, while Syd is a struggling mystery writer, hacking away at his great mystery novel while failing to sell crime-show screenplays to television studios. Syd an American struggling writer and Alicia his wife a painter from a wealthy family are living in an isolated hamlet. You might be surprised, as I was, to discover that Patricia Highsmith lived for a while in England and that she set one novel - this one - in Suffolk, as well as writing two others in the UK in the early/mid 1960's. I love Patricia Highsmith. He does not confront her, however, or alert the police. A grifter named Ripley living in New York during the 1960s is hired by a wealthy man to begin a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder. The hierarchy having been generally: Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, James Ellroy, & Patricia Highsmith. Highsmith is a master of this type of psychological suspense story. It all builds to an ending that seems to have been a deal-breaker for a lot of people, but worked beautifully for me; it's a gloriously ironic and tense series of events that plays out beautifully, all in the capable hands of Highsmith. Sydney Bartleby is an American novelist living near Sydney eventually travels to Brighton, where he deduces Alicia has been staying, and manages to find her and Edward. But when his wife actually disappears, this suspicious action, along with his journal of murder mystery ideas, make the police suspect he murdered his wife. I think very few genre writers such as Highsmith can get away with an implausible story (one is immediately reminded of "Strangers on a Train" where two strangers swap murders, and of course, her Ripley series.) The trick w/ Highsmith, of course, is that we become so complicit in Sydeny's machinations and our thinking so enmeshed w/ his that we kind of perversely start to root for him.
I'm glad I read it.Really the core pleasure of reading Highsmith (and, Lord, what a supremely reliable pleasure!) She lets us into multiple characters perspectives *enough* that we have some doubts and curiosities about more than one of them.Highsmith achieves a really masterful balance here, in a couple different ways. Anthology based around Patricia Highsmith stories.
