"The Palace" is about two friends Chen Xing and Lui Li, who are palace maids, and their relationships with the 13th Prince. This drama achieved tremendous commercial success in China when it was released in 2016. Princess Weiyoung shares many similarities with the Story of Yanxi Palace, and perhaps a similar target audience too. The female protagonists in both dramas are also similar too.
Beware though, that this drama is a tragedy (see my review here).It’s different from the typical Chinese palace dramas that usually only focus on female concubines and their fight for power. Two palace maids play a dangerous game of love, but only one will capture the heart of a prince. This film was directed by Pan Anzi and written by Yu Zheng, and starring Zhou Dongyu, Chen Xiao and Zhao Liying. It is later followed by Palace 2 (Chinese: 宮鎖珠帘) (2012), Palace 3: The Lost Daughter (Chinese: 宫锁连城), and the film The Palace (20… It has literally all the essential elements of a great palace drama, complex schemes, multi-dimensional characters, great acting, and a poetic atmosphere.
Zhang Xiao (Cecilia Liu), a young woman from the 21st century found herself accidentally moved back in time to the Kangxi Emperor’s reign (Qing Dynasty). It is once again a love based story and Yang Mi & Feng Shao Feng will also take part.During Kangxi's reign in the Qing Dynasty, Chen Xiang enters the palace and meets the maid Liu Li who is the same age as her. If you find Yanxi a bit too poppy, then consider Ruyi.The drama is also a bit long with 75 episodes. What’s yours?

Personally, this is my favourite palace drama The drama that put Sun Li into megastardom, Empresses in the Palace is one of the most, if not the most, well-known Chinese palace dramas.
That’s just how much of a masterpiece this drama is, that it has become the ideal model for all political-historical dramas.
It’s been praised by many people for the amazing performance of Zhou Xun as well as the accurate portrayals of many palace ceremonies. The drama is Scarlet Heart is one of the most famous Chinese historical dramas of all time, not just in the sub-genre of palace drama. After these two, I’d pick Scarlet Heart and Empresses in the Palace.

The two girls become fast friends. ‘Nearly as good as Nirvana in Fire’ is still a compliment. However, the people who have watched this drama absolutely love it (including me), as you can see from the rating below. I absolutely love the ending and strongly recommend to watch it, even if it means you have to skip the middle.
The Palace also known as Palace: Lock Sinensis is a 2013 Chinese historical romance film. (Written by Production Company) Like Fuyao, it has fantasy/magical element with quite a bit of romance. Many people might think that palace dramas are repetitive because of this perception but I disagree. It’s about politics, not just formal state politics (i.e the fight for the throne, the emperor’s favours, policies) but also politics at an individual level. ‘As good as Nirvana in Fire’ is probably the best compliment a historical drama can get.
